The name "Malvasia" was once used to refer to the city of Monemvasia during the Frankish period. It also became synonymous with the exceptional and famous wine produced in the region since the 13th century AD. Due to unique geographical and climatic conditions, this area is ideal for cultivating vineyards and producing high-quality wines. Malvasia wine, however, predates the 13th century. Unfortunately, during the 16th century, when the area fell under Ottoman rule, the cultivation of Malvasia grapes ceased in Monemvasia. Production of this celebrated wine shifted to other parts of Greece and abroad.
The rich history of Monemvasia is intertwined with the story of Malvasia wine, whose golden, sweet flavor captured the hearts of traders and connoisseurs across the Mediterranean. In 2010, Monemvasia Winery achieved a significant milestone when Malvasia wines were recognized as a Protected Designation of Origin (PDO). The vintage of 2010 was bottled, aged for two years, and finally introduced to the market in 2013, marking the rebirth of this historic wine in its homeland.
This summer, I had the opportunity to taste Monemvasia-Malvasia wine within the castle walls of Monemvasia, an experience enriched by the breathtaking view of the sea and the aroma of centuries-old history. The wine's rich, sweet flavor transported me through time, showcasing the centuries-long winemaking tradition of Monemvasia.
In my opinion, this wine is versatile enough to be enjoyed as an aperitif. It pairs wonderfully with desserts, such as diples or syrup-based pastries, and even complements a fine cigar beautifully.
The history of this wine is as sophisticated and layered as its taste. Since 2010, its revival has been a symbol of cultural and oenological pride, offering modern wine lovers a connection to the past while delighting their senses with every sip. Cheers to the legacy of Monemvasia-Malvasia wine—truly a sip of history in a glass!
𝐌𝐚𝐥𝐯𝐚𝐬𝐢𝐚 ονομαζόταν η πόλη της 𝚳𝛐𝛎𝛆𝛍𝛃𝛂𝛔𝛊άς κατά την περίοδο των Φράγκων και έτσι ονομαζόταν και το εξαιρετικό και διάσημο κρασί που παραγόταν από τον 13ο αιώνα μΧ στην περιοχή. Για συγκεκριμένους λόγους που δεν είναι της παρούσης, η περιοχή αυτή είναι εξαιρετική για την καλλιέργεια της αμπέλου και την παραγωγή ποιοτικών κρασιών. Ο οίνος Malvasia, άρχισε να παράγεται πριν από τον 13ο αιώνα, όμως τον 16ο αιώνα, με την κατάληψη της περιοχής από τους Οθωμανούς, η καλλιέργεια του σταμάτησε, και ο συγκεκριμένος οίνος άρχισε να παράγεται σε άλλες περιοχές, τόσο στην Ελλάδα όσο και στο εξωτερικό.

Το 2010, από την Οινοποιητική Μονεμβασίας, αναγνωρίστηκαν οι οίνοι Μονεμβασιά – Malvasia ως Προστατευόμενη Ονομασία Προέλευσης (ΠΟΠ), εμφιαλώθηκε η σοδειά του 2010, παλαιώθηκε για 2 χρόνια και προσφέρθηκε στην αγορά το 2013.
Δοκίμασα τον 𝚶ί𝛎𝛐 𝚲𝛊𝛂𝛔𝛕ό 𝚳𝛐𝛎𝛆𝛍𝛃𝛂𝛔𝛊ά-𝐌𝐚𝐥𝐯𝐚𝐬𝐢𝐚 φέτος το καλοκαίρι, μέσα στο Κάστρο της Μονεμβασιάς (𝛑𝛂ί𝛇𝛆𝛊 𝛋𝛂𝛊 𝛕𝛐 𝛔𝛋𝛈𝛎𝛊𝛋ό 𝛕𝛐 𝛒ό𝛌𝛐 𝛕𝛐𝛖 𝛃𝛆𝛃𝛂ί𝛚ς) και εντυπωσιάστηκα από την πλούσια και γλυκιά του γεύσή, που με ταξίδεψε στη μακραίωνη ιστορία της Μονεμβασιάς. Κατά τη γνώμη μου μπορούμε άνετα να απολαμβάνουμε τον συγκεκριμένο οίνο και σαν απεριτίφ, ενώ ο συνδυασμός του με γλυκά είναι περίφημος. Δοκιμάστε το με δίπλες η με γλυκά ταψιού. Πηγαίνει επίσης περίφημα και με πούρο.
